The Capitol was constructed between 1860 to 1874.The State was embarking on a cleaning and conservation, and coating project for the structure when a truck driver rammed his big rig into the South Portico, seriously damaging much of the granite in this area, scorching the surfaces above, and also damaging some interior spaces in the vicinity. Carey & Co. was retained by the Department of General Services to act as Master Architect for the project, which included design and construction administration for granite repair, waterproofing, repainting of scorched surfaces above the portico, and advising on the repair of damaged historic rooms.
