City of Paris/Neiman Marcus
San Francisco, California

In a King Soloman-like approach to conflict resolution, the City of San Francisco determined that the City of Paris Department Store could be demolished for a new Neiman Marcus Department Store; however, the City decreed that the dome and rotunda must remain. The architect for the new store, Phillip Johnson then decided the four story ornamental plaster rotunda with stained glass dome under wire glass skylight must be relocated. Alice Carey acted as the project manager to completely disassemble, restore, and reassemble the edifice.
