First Church of Christ Scientist
Oakland, California

This Romanesque Revival-style church was designed by Henry A. Schulze and constructed in 1900, of Nevada lava stone over a granite base. As early as the 1930s, stone repairs were needed on the structure. In 1980, a thick cementations coating was applied over most of the masonry. However, the building continued to deteriorate beneath the coating, and by 2004, the coating itself was failing in many areas. Carey & Co. was hired by the congregation to assess the condition of the masonry and recommend repairs.
